Sir Ken Robinson speaks at EDspaces

Gratnells is delighted to present Sir Ken Robinson as the keynote speaker for this year's EDspaces show.

Sir Ken Robinson is an internationally recognised authority in creativity and innovation in education and business, and is one of the world’s leading speakers.  The videos of his famous talks to the prestigious TED Conference are the most viewed ever in the history of TED and have been seen by over 300 million people in more than 150 countries.

Sir Ken works with governments worldwide, international agencies, Fortune 500 companies and leading cultural organizations. He led a national commission on creativity, education and the economy for the UK Government, was the central figure in developing a strategy for creative and economic development as part of the Peace Process in Northern Ireland and was one of four international advisors to the Singapore Government for a strategy to become the creative hub of South East Asia.

Called “one of the world’s elite thinkers on creativity and innovation” by Fast Company magazine, Sir Ken has received numerous awards and recognitions for his groundbreaking contributions along with a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for services to the arts. His 2009 book, The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, is a New York Times best seller and has been translated into 21 languages. A 10th anniversary edition of his classic work on creativity and innovation, Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative, was published in 2011. Finding Your Element: How to Discover Your Talents and Passions and Transform Your Life, was published by Viking in May 2013 and is also a New York Times best seller. His latest book, Creative Schools: The Grassroots Revolution That’s Transforming Education (Viking, 2015), written with Robinson’s trademark wit and engaging style, includes groundbreaking research and tackles the critical issue of how to transform the nation’s troubled educational system.

In securing Sir Ken’s appearance as a keynote speaker at EDspaces, Gratnells Managing Director, Murray Hudson, says “We know that the learning environment has to meet the needs of all children whatever their interests, skills and abilities. We understand too that this will require changes to the current system and Sir Ken Robinson’s radical approach to the learning environment is one that we readily endorse. When we were offered the opportunity to sponsor a keynote speaker for EDspaces, he was without hesitation our first choice.”

Evidence from the sector suggests that Sir Ken’s views are increasingly influential. His most popular presentation, a TED talk entitled “Do Schools Kill Creativity” has accumulated a staggering 41 million views to date and delegates to EDspaces can expect a similarly thought-provoking presentation in Kansas later this year.

International Marketing Director at Gratnells, Richard Picking, says that the company’s expanding global presence has provided further evidence to support the proposition that a creative learning environment has universal value for children, whatever system they grow up with. “We export to 68 countries around the globe and we are now active as a business with projects in the USA, the Middle East and Japan and in a series of collaborations with major organisations such as Dulux and Fischertechnik. Along with specialists in outdoor learning, colour research, designers and architects we are helping to create spaces that achieve the optimum balance between good order and stimulating, creative surroundings.”
