Where educational vision meets atmosphere

In the northern part of the Netherlands, just above Amsterdam, in the village of Sint Pancras, a unique educational project has come to life: IKC Het Vogelnest. Two schools have been brought together in one brand-new, modern building, fully designed around child-centred learning. In this educational approach, the child takes centre stage and the interior had to fully reflect this vision. The result? A warm, flexible and thoughtfully designed learning environment.

A school that feels like a second home
IKC Het Vogelnest aimed to create a setting where calm, clarity and engagement take the lead. Heutink, specialists in learning environments, took care of the design and furnishing of the learning plazas, (early years) classrooms and the staff room. By choosing soft colours, rounded shapes and natural materials, a welcoming environment was created – one in which children love to learn and play.

An interior that adapts
The spaces within the building are not only used by the school but also by the out-of-school care service. Flexibility was therefore an essential requirement for the furnishing. Gratnells played a key role in achieving this. Storage walls with transparent Gratnells trays have been placed throughout the classrooms and learning plazas. These trays make it easy to store materials in an organised way – and to find them quickly. Ideal for both teachers and pupils.

In the early years groups, mobile units with Gratnells trays were chosen. These cabinets can be easily moved and adapted to suit the activity at hand – from play corners that can quickly be transformed into workstations or quiet reading areas. Thanks to a variety of tray sizes, there is always a practical storage solution for every material, game or teaching method.

Thoughtful and practical design
Beyond storage, tables and seating were also carefully selected for their flexibility. Many elements are mobile and can be adjusted to suit the teaching moment. Classrooms offer a clear view of the learning plazas, creating a sense of calm and clarity. Central teaching areas are complemented by small work and play corners – always close at hand and neatly organised.

A project to be proud of
The new interior is greatly appreciated by both staff and pupils. The sense of calm, the flexibility, and the clever storage solutions like those from Gratnells all contribute to a safe and pleasant learning environment. IKC Het Vogelnest is a shining example of what a modern school environment in the Netherlands can be: thoughtful, atmospheric, and ready for the future of learning.
