The Impact of Indoor air quality

The importance of indoor air quality cannot be overstated. A classroom’s environment directly influences learning outcomes and student well-being.

Studies have shown that optimal indoor air quality contributes to enhanced cognitive function, better concentration, and improved overall health among students and educators alike.

Renowned education expert Professor Stephen Heppell highlights the significant impact of air quality on the learning experience. Proper ventilation and air circulation are critical for maintaining a conducive environment where young minds can thrive. As Professor Heppell emphasises, fresh, clean air can boost students’ energy levels, heighten focus, and ultimately contribute to a more engaging educational experience.

“Our research, and others’, confirms that poor light levels, the wrong temperatures, inappropriate sound volumes and rhythms, humidity, air pollution, Co2, and air pressure can all impair learning. Our Learnometer research tool automatically samples your classroom environment, and makes suggestions through a unique algorithm as to what might be changed to allow students to learn and perform at their best.”

    Top Tips

    Ventilation Matters:
Ensure proper ventilation in classrooms to allow fresh air circulation and minimise the buildup of pollutants.

    Monitor temperature:
A range of 18°C – 21°C is optimal for learning and performance drops outside this range.

    Introduce Plants:
Plants in the classroom help to reduce CO2. Some of the best oxygenating plants for the classroom are:

    • Ivy
    • Fern
    • Aloe vera
    • Spider plant
    • Money plant
    • Rubber plant
